Retaining Walls in Roswell, GA
We build and repair retaining walls, and level sunken concrete, for homes across Roswell.
Roswell has a lot of sloped lots, wooded backyards and red clay, and all three are hard on a retaining wall. We come out from Sandy Springs to build new walls, fix ones that are leaning or cracking, and lift concrete that has settled. Most visits start with a walk around the yard and a plain explanation of what we see.
What Roswell soil and slopes do to a wall
Much of Roswell sits on rolling ground that drops toward the Chattahoochee and its creeks. Plenty of homes are built on cut-and-fill lots, where the builder flattened a pad for the house and pushed soil to the edges. Those edges are where retaining walls end up, and they carry real load. Under the topsoil, most yards here are Georgia red clay. Clay holds water instead of letting it drain, and wet clay is heavy. It also swells when it soaks up a summer storm and shrinks back during a dry spell, so a wall gets pushed and released over and over through the year. Our hard summer downpours make it worse, because a lot of water arrives at once and has nowhere to go. Most of the wall failures we see in Roswell come back to water, not to the blocks or timbers themselves.
Signs your wall needs attention
Walk the length of your wall and look at it from the end, not just the front. A wall that leans out at the top, bows in the middle, or has a section that steps forward is moving. Look for cracks that run through the blocks or the mortar, gaps opening between courses, and cap stones that have shifted or fallen. On timber walls, push a screwdriver into the lower timbers. If it sinks in easily, the wood is rotting. Check the ground too. Soil washing out at the base, a soggy strip behind the wall after rain, or water seeping through the face all tell you the drainage is not working. In older neighbourhoods near the historic district, you may also find walls built of stacked stone or old railroad ties with no drainage behind them at all. Those often held for a long time, but once they start to move they usually keep moving.
Repair or replace
A short wall with one bad section, loose caps, or a blocked drain can often be repaired. We take down the failed part, fix what is behind it, and rebuild it to match. If the whole wall leans, if the base has sunk, or if there is no gravel backfill and no drain pipe behind it, patching the face rarely lasts. In that case rebuilding is usually cheaper over time than repairing the same wall twice. Rotting timber walls are a common case here. Once the lower timbers go, the rest follows, and replacing the wall with block or boulder is often the more sensible choice. We will tell you which way we would go and why, and if a repair is enough, we will say so.
Services we offer in Roswell
Retaining Wall Installation covers new walls for terraced yards, driveways cut into a hill, patios, and garden beds on a slope. Every wall we build starts with a compacted base, gravel backfill and a drain at the bottom so water can get out. Retaining Wall Repair is for walls that are leaning, cracked or washing out. Block Retaining Walls use interlocking concrete units and suit most Roswell yards, from low garden walls to taller walls along a driveway. Boulder Retaining Walls fit the wooded, natural look of many lots here and work well along creeks and steep banks. Timber Retaining Walls are an option for low walls and beds where a softer look is wanted, and we will be honest about how long wood lasts in wet clay. We also handle Concrete Leveling and Mudjacking for driveways, patios and walkways that have sunk, which is common when fill soil settles next to a house. Sidewalk Repair covers lifted, cracked or sunken sections that have become a trip hazard. Emergency Retaining Wall Repair is for a wall that has partly collapsed or is clearly about to. We do not offer after-hours service, but during our working hours we put those calls first and can help make the area safe.
What a visit involves
We start by walking the wall with you and asking what you have noticed and when. We look at the wall from both ends, check the base, and look at where the water comes from: downspouts, the slope above, a neighbour's yard or the driveway. On repairs we may dig a small test hole behind the wall to see whether there is gravel and a drain. We measure the height and length, note how close it is to the house, the driveway or a property line, and look at access, since many Roswell backyards are tight or steep and that changes how materials get in. Afterward you get a written estimate that explains the work in plain terms, including what we would do about drainage. If a taller wall may need permits or an engineer's design under local rules, we will tell you before anything is agreed.
How to book
Call us at (404) 010-0005 or email info@retainingwallsandysprings.com and tell us your address, roughly how long and tall the wall is, and what you are seeing. A few photos taken from the front and from one end help a lot. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed on Sunday. If a wall is actively falling, call rather than email so we can talk through keeping people and cars clear of it until we arrive. When you are ready, use the Request a Wall Estimate button and we will set up a time to come out to your home in Roswell.
